چکیده

Professional performing artists routinely manage stressful demands encountered during public performances. Fourteen professional performing artists (6 dancers, 6 opera singers, and 2 conductors) rehearsed and performed in a concert hall setting while wearing the Vivometric LifeShirt, an ambulatory instrument that measures autonomic regulation. Contrary to our hypothesis, that greater parasympathetic changes from baseline to performance would be related to higher perceived states of subjective flow during performance, we found decreased cardiac autonomic balance (CAB) and regulatory capacity (CAR) was related to dispositional and state flow in performing artists. As a group, they endorsed moderate to high dispositional and state flow as measured by two selfreport instruments. This case study is the first study to investigate psychophysiological flow states during public performances. A larger sample size is needed to understand the role autonomic regulation plays in subjective flow experiences; however, the findings in this study suggest that decreased autonomic regulatory capacity is not necessarily deleterious to performance flow experiences.

The Effects of Heart Rate Variability on Reading Performance among Iranian EFL Learners

Psychophysiological studies and MRI neuro-imaging findings provide evidence that heart rate variability (HRV) which is in control of our emotions affects our brain cognitive centers. It has been shown that coherent heart-brain interaction can change the pattern of the afferent cardiac input that is sent to the brain. For this purpose, the Institute of HeartMath (IHM) has proposed a kind of biof...

Ambulatory recording of within- and between-subject variation in autonomic nervous system activity

The central theme of this thesis was the non-invasive measurement of withinand between-subject variation in autonomic nervous system activity. Reliable and valid noninvasive measures are essential to ambulatory monitoring, which in turn is crucial for the ecologically valid study of the link between biology and behavior. In this final chapter, I first summarize the main results from the laborat...

Alterations in HPA-axis and autonomic nervous system functioning in childhood anxiety disorders point to a chronic stress hypothesis.

BACKGROUND It is of debate whether or not childhood anxiety disorders (AD) can be captured by one taxonomic construct. This study examined whether perceived arousal (PA), autonomic nervous system (ANS) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis measures can distinguish children with different primary diagnoses of clinical anxiety disorders (AD) from each other, and from a general population ...

Characterization of affective states by pupillary dynamics and autonomic correlates

With the recent advent of new recording devices and an easier access to signal processing tools, researchers are increasingly exploring and studying the Pupil Dilation (PD) signal. Recently, numerous studies pointed out the relations between PD dynamics and psychophysiological states. Although it is well known that PD is controlled by the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), and ANS responses are re...

Future Directions in Surface Electromyography

The use of surface electromyography (SEMG) has increased exponentially in the past four decades. SEMG is one of the most widespread measures employed today in psychophysiological assessment and one of three primary biofeedback modalities. This article briefly outlines three areas that the author believes are important for SEMG to address if it is to continue to flourish in the future: applicati...
